Today Calculated Column problem is SharePoint?

 hi,
I would like to be able to use today's date in a calculated column in a SharePoint list to, for example, determine whether a task is overdue. There is a well-documented trick that involves creating a dummy column named "Today," using it in a formula, and then deleting it, thereby "tricking" SharePoint into using the Today function.
The problem is that this method does not work reliably -- the calculation is not dynamic; it is only made when the item is saved, and therefore the Today "column" effectively becomes the Modified Date. (This is probably why SharePoint won't let you use the Today function in a straight-forward way.)
Has anyone found a solution that works? I know I can use javascript to get the actual date on the client side and display colors, flags, whatever, but I am looking for a "server side" solution.

sharepoint designer

Hi,
Customization Using SharePoint Designer
Overview

Editing look and feel
– Master pages
– Content pages
– Customized vs. not customized

• Data Views
– Data Source Library
– Formatting in Data Form web parts
– Web part connections

Configuring workflows
Overview
• In many cases SharePoint Designer (formerly FrontPage) can be a substitute for a server side programmer.

• It allows the user to
– Edit the look and fill of SharePoint sites
– Edit master pages in SharePoint sites
– Pull data from multiple sources
– Sort and filter the data
– Format the data using a WYSIWYG editor
– Configure workflows

Master and Content Pages
• Master Page is a page that servers as a template for content pages and has extension .master. Each site has a master page gallery for master page storage (example: http://<server>/_catalogs/masterpage/).

• Content Page is a page that uses a master page to provide a template and has extension . aspx. Contet pages can be stored anywhere on the site.

Master and Content Pages Illustration
• By using a master page, designers can factor common elements of contents page into a master page template.

Customized vs. Not Customized
• Not a customized page - SharePoint retrieves the page from site definition (Master Template) that is stored on the web server.

• Customized - SharePoint saves and retrieves the page from the content database instead of the site definition. Thus, subsequent changes made to the side definition will not be reflected on that page.

• Revert to template page – means revert to uncustomized page

Data Source Catalog
• Data Source Library organizes all data sources selected by the user for building sites

– SQL databases
– Web services
– SharePoint lists (on any site)
– XML files
– Business Data Catalog
Data Form Web Part
• Data View is a representation of data from a data source

Designers can format data in data views using:
– Sorting
– Filtering
– Applying styles
– Conditional formatting

• Designers can connect data views using web part connections

Workflow from Designer Perspective
• Designers can configure new workflows beyond the ones that are already available.

• Designers select activities (from predefined set) for the workflow and specify conditions for when activities execute and when activities end.

• A finished workflow is a set of activities connected together.
Designer vs. Developer
• Designer cannot do everything that is available to developers through Visual Studio 2005.

SharePoint Designer 2007 does not provide:

– InfoPath form integration
– Creation of custom activities
– Workflow modification
 Thanks,
Raja..

what is sharepoint?????

Sharepoint:

Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2010 facilitates easy, connected collaboration across an enterprise organization. It enables people to work together on documents, projects, and tasks and to leverage best practices by using the combined collaboration features of Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies. Index and search services, as well as newly introduced people services, allow you to increase efficiency by finding relevant people, teams, sites, and other information.

Finding and organizing sites, people, and other information

index and search:

Search:    SharePoint Portal Server provides a search feature that finds all types of content — people, documents, sites, and other items on the portal site — based on keywords you enter. Search can find content stored in different sources, such as Web sites, file systems, mail servers, and databases. The results can be organized in different ways, such as by site, area, or date. For a more specific search, you can use the advanced search option to search by properties of items, to sort results by factors other than relevance, and to set other advanced search options.
Best :   Bets enhance search efficiency and provide guidance to users by directing them to people, sites, documents, or other items considered particularly relevant to their search. SharePoint Portal Server displays Best Bets at the top of a search results list.
Site Directory  :  The Site Directory is the easiest way to add content to the portal site for searching. When a user adds a site, they have the option to include its contents in search results. A search administrator can have sites automatically approved for searching or can manage approval for each site. After approval, a site is indexed and its contents appears in search results.
Alerts :   You can ask to be alerted when changes occur to the results for a specific search.
     Areas:
To make it easy for users to navigate, browse, and find what they need, you can divide portal site content into areas. Areas let you organize content — from documents to people to sites — into sets of related information even though the content can be stored in different sources and formats. To control all of the content in an area, the portal site administrator can assign a manager for the area. The manager can then control what content appears in the area and who has access

Sharing, collaborating, publishing, and managing content

SharePoint Portal Serverenables you to easily share information, leverage best practices, and work together with others on documents, projects, and other efforts. Some of the ways you can do that are by:

Windows SharePoint Servicesallows you to create a Web site by selecting a template that best suits the project. SharePoint Portal Server includes a diverse collection of templates to meet business needs. You can create sites to facilitate meetings, organization, teams, or projects. By default, each site template features a custom set of collaboration features from Windows SharePoint Services. If you work with external customers or partners, or if you have users who need to access data from outside of your organization's firewall, SharePoint Portal Server allows both internal and external users to view and interact with the same content and data. After the sites are created, SharePoint Portal Server can search these sites the same way it searches other content on the portal.
